Lengthy checks at border crossings are a source of great inconvenience to travellers, but there are also signs of reconciliation.
After 19 years of radio silence, East and West Berliners are able to talk on the phone again.
The “switchboard girl” manually connects callers, using pre-war technology. The exchange only has access to ten old telephone lines, providing just a tiny fraction of the service required.
